Leading Greater China IP carrier continues its growth and expansion in Taiwan’s IDC market

(Hong Kong, 31 July 2001) Greater China’s leading IP carrier Diyixian.com Limited has stepped up its investment in the Taiwan’s Internet Data Center (IDC) market through the launch in July of two IDCs at Taichung and Kaohsiung, in the teeth of fierce competition and at a time when the island’s telecoms sector is experiencing a significant amount of reshuffling and an acceleration towards full-blown liberalization.

With regulatory hurdles coming down since mid-2000, a number of domestic and foreign enterprises have jumped onto the IDC bandwagon making an ambitious but often badly orchestrated bid for this multibillion market. It soon appears that this ambition is abruptly trashed by the pervading pessimism in the global telecoms and technology sector, and then swallowed up by a spate of withdrawals or defections with many stressed-out, tunnel-visioned contenders trying desperately to flee the market or slow the pace of development.

The main difference between Diyixian and other IDC operators is the scope of business and the kind of vision towards the economic future of the Greater China market. In addition to conventional co-location services, Diyixian provides, through its data centers in the region, a wide range of services including dedicated hosting, IP virtual private networks (IP private networks) and managed IP solutions tailored for small and large businesses. As CEO Lap Man aptly pointed out, while the revenues from conventional services for the first two quarters of the year were slightly below expectations, such diversification of service offerings may help cushion against the continued uncertainty in the global telecoms sector, providing Diyixian a stronger position against future competition.

Anticipating accelerated exodus of Taiwanese companies to mainland provinces , Diyixian will continue the expansion of its value-added managed IP solutions on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, according to James Huang, General Manager of Diyixian’s Taiwan branch office. He said this would ensure the delivery of high-bandwidth connectivity for the ever-increasing cross-strait traffic, and the accelerated transition of labor-intensive industries into high-tech clusters across the central and southern terrains of Taiwan.
